In August 2019, the FCC released order 19-72A1 mandating the sunset of POTS (plain old telephone service) lines by August 2, 2022. With the deadline approaching in a week or so, major providers such as AT&T, Lumen, and Verizon will be allowed to increase their price to maintain or disable services or provide alternative options.
POTS lines are still commonly used in business for:
- Fire alarms
- Elevator lines
- Burglary lines
- Faxing
- Inventory use
- Security doors
- Emergency lines
With tens of millions of POTS lines, CLECs (Competitive Local Exchange Carriers) are not mandated to remove services. However, with the increasing cost of copper infrastructure, many providers are replacing POTS lines with alternative technologies such as Pots in a Box which mainly consist of the following:
- ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) – Supporting multiple connections powering phone, fax, fire, elevator lines, and more
- Cellular coverage – Acts as a backup in the event of circuit failure or as primary connection through LTE/5G services
- UPS – Uninterrupted Power Supply guarantees power protection in the event of a power outage
Pots in a box or alternative solutions provide cost savings (an average of 30%), more visibility, and control of customer environments. UCC Networks provides a multitude of alternative options to copper POTS lines. Contact us to learn more.
